Officer Russo stomped up the path toward the scene of the investigation. Officer Kincaid surveyed the scene and was trying to recreate what had happened. He looked like he was doing some form of new exercise, bending his knees and pushing off, in a simulated jump, then looking at the footprints he left behind. Officer Kincaid sighed and slightly rolled his eyes as Officer Russo approached. Officer Kincaid will think Iâm interfering with his investigation, but there are things he needs to know about the victim.
âHello, Officer Kincaid.â Officer Russo nodded somberly.
âHi, Robert. Wish we could meet under better circumstances.â Officer Kincaid glanced down at the footprints he had made in doing his strange exercise.
âWeâre cops. Our jobs are to deal with lousy circumstances. So, whatâs it look like?â Officer Russo took out a small notepad and pen.
âIt looks like she jumped,â Officer Kincaid pointed. âSee the footprints leading to the edge, and then the deep ones at the edge? That's just how you would expect the heals to dig in if she jumped.â
âShe didn't jump.â Officer Russo spoke as if it were a truth etched in stone and carved by the finger of God. There was no way she jumped. âThe scene has been staged to make it appear that way.â
Officer Kincaid raised an eyebrow and stroked his chin. âHow can you be so sure?â
âShe's a Catholic.â Officer Russo fought to stifle a fatherly defensiveness building within him. Keep it to the facts. âAnd not just an ordinary Catholic. She goes to Mass every day. To commit suicide to her would condemn her soul to hell. She would never do that.â
Officer Kincaid raised a skeptical eyebrow, a frown forming. âListen, Robert, I know she's your daughter, but we have to follow the evidence.â
Robert clenched his jaw to try to hold back his anger. âOfficer Kincaid, the fact that the victim is Catholic and would regard suicide as a sure route to eternal damnation is evidence against a motive for suicide. You have to treat this as an attempted homicide.â
Officer Kincaidâs eyes widened. âThere's no evidence to support that!â
âOfficer Kincaid, a young girl is found unconscious on a ledge of a cliff with severe blunt-force trauma to the back of her head. That's evidence!â Officer Russo squinted at his fellow officer.
Officer Kincaid gave in with a sigh. âOkay, Robert, we cannot rule out an attempted homicide, but it sure looks like attempted suicide. Teenagers attempt suicide even when theyâre Catholic. It happens. And sometimes they even make a lame attempt that leaves them on a ledge where they will be found and not at the bottom of the cliff. Look, it's your daughter, man! You're too close to this one. You have to let us do the investigation. If there is foul play involved, it will eventually come out.â
âI just want to make sure we don't jump to any conclusions. She was in with a bad crowd, Denny. She had just broken off a relationship with a known gang member, Rodrigo Alvarez.
